Understanding Jewelry Castings

Jewelry casting is essential for creating intricate designs and precise pieces that are difficult to achieve through traditional fabrication methods. It is a time honored technique among jewelers, allowing high-quality results and a crucial step in creating efficient mass production of pieces.

The Art of Wax Carving and Mold Making

Before metal can take shape, skilled artisans at Custom Fashion Jewels must engage in wax carving, delicately sculpting detailed wax models that serve as blueprints for the finished pieces. These models are then attached to a sprue in preparation for mold making— this is a critical step that creates a negative space for molten metal to eventually fill.

Lost waxing or investment casting, is known for its ability to capture any small details and make it sought after from different industries, creating duplicates based on a specific model.

Additional methods jewlers may employ include:

Centrifugal casting, a slightly different process from investment waxing, uses the weight of the metal and centrifugal force, helping in to pour the metal into the mold, mainly used for heavy materials such as white golds.

Vacuum casting is quite expensive but involves far less pressure, using a vacuum to draw the metal into the mold, with much less gas entrapment.

The best thing in general about waxing is that it is easy to be experimented with, heat can be applied when you do not get the desired results.

From Burnout to Cast—Executing Precision

Once molds are vulcanized, they enter the burnout phase, where wax is melted away inside a kiln leaving behind a hollow cavity. This stage prepares the mold for receiving molten precious metals, such as sterling silver or gold casting alloys.

Finishing Touches in High-Quality Jewelry Castings

After metal casting, our pieces undergo stone setting where gemstones are carefully added using specialized tools such as pliers, tongs, and burs. Texturing and enameling further enhance our creations before they undergo final inspections in New York‘s competitive market.

Innovations in Jewelry Casting Equipment and Techniques

Casting equipment has seen significant improvements over time, with new sand casting techniques opening up possibilities for more complex metal castings without compromising the high-quality finish expected by our customers. The introduction of advanced solder techniques further refines our work, delivering unparalleled quality casting.
